Dad and Kids Cover Depeche Mode (Video)

AWWW, LOL, Pop Culture — By on 2012/01/26 10:41 AM

Colombian video artist Dicken Schrader and his kids, Milah and Korben, cover Depeche Mode’s Everything Counts on a xylophone, an old Yamaha keyboard and a bunch of homemade improvised instruments. The best thing you will see today, guaranteed!

I cannot tell you how happy this made me.  It made my day…no, it made my entire week!! Thank you so much for sharing this.  It is awesome beyond words.

  • Adeedoos

Are you kidding me???? Awesome!!!! Cute kids, and dad doing 4 things at once!
    Crazy good!

  • Johnsmith

What’s up with his son? The little guy is hilarious to watch!

    • Jerimiah Gentry

Right? He’s got this both startled and confident look the entire time.

Anyone that loves kids, is a dad or mum, it’s just fun

This is the coolest Dad in the world.

  • taraleen

This was so amazing! Made my day.

  • Restita DeJesus

If I had 20 thumbs, they’d all be thumbs up. This is too cool.

    • Jack Asserson

If you had 20 thumbs, you could also be in a freak show. Now that would be awesome. Could you imagine what you could do with 20 thumbs? The thumb is the greatest of all of the fingers.

  • Dweeber

The coolest little thing about this – the girl’s nailing the rhythm. She’s tapping that hanging rattle dead on the “& of 4″ every time.

    • Anonymous

Just from this one video, and how talented the dad is, they were probably brought up learning music from birth.

      • Anonymous

I think it’s more likely down to some clever editing over all.

        • Erika

Its definitely not the “clever editing.” Its obviously done in one shot.

          • Jpst

I disagree, If you watch him playing the xylophone you can see that the
video of the xylophone does not match his right hand playing it. In the
video, the mallet never leaves the confines of the video camera. However
when watching his right hand you can see that he brings the mallet way
back as he is playing. It is edited.

          • fabs

DM videos are also edited. This is how videos are made.

i love it but this is not a live one take thing. at 3:58 the little girl misses the chimes but you hear them anyway. the giveaway is that the guy is a video “artist”. i love it anyway.

There is always one Debbie Downer. That person that just has to watch it 5 times figure it out make sense of the wonderful happening and ruin the magic for others. Just can’t enjoy it can you?…smh

    • Anonymous

      um, no she doesn’t

    • Jedibaritone

I’m with Scrutinus. It’s a great cover, a lot of fun, and cute as heck, but what we’re hearing isn’t what we’re seeing,

The little girl is hitting the cymbals with a plastic recorder and we’re not hearing the sound of plastic hitting metal. The little boy’s shaker egg movements don’t match with what I’m hearing, and if the dad is playing the kazoo THAT close to the mic, it’d be WAY louder than it is, plus whatever the kazoo is hanging by is rubbing against the mic and there’s no sound of it.

I’m not picking it apart. I’m a musician with recording studio experience, I’ve played recorders and shaker eggs and when they don’t match, it sticks out to me like a red flower on a field of green grass.

I love their song, and I love their performance, but the song was clearly recorded separately.

      • APILegacy

I’ve been an engineer and producer for twenty years, taught sound engineering in a major university, and own my own studio. You’re incorrect. Any loud sound source up to a certain amount of db is not going to distort an ldc as seen in the video, especially if the pad is in. I’ve miked Leedy snares with a u47. Trust me. The kazoo is rubbing against the metal retainer, not the head basket, and even if it was, would easily be knocked out by masking or bleed. This video is real. Plastic hitting metal would not be a detectable sound if it’s masked by everything else, or a low cut filter at 100 hz takes care of that. Same way we get rid of resonance in dreadnought acoustics or sub sonics in micro phonic pickups.

        • Johnny

Speculation on what sounds someone expects to hear is easy to dismiss, but the xylophone stick at 2:10 gives it away as an edited video.
It was never claimed to be a single take. And I don’t know why it’s so terrible to reveal that it isn’t. It doesn’t make what’s happening in this video any less magical.
Much like anything else we see on our screens, we know it’s been edited, but we give ourselves to the illusion willingly.

This father clearly has a great rapport with his children, and has inspired them to engage with, and be enthusiastic about music.
That’s what’s magical, not his questionable coordination skills.

OMG seriously get a life. This video shows the hard work they all put into getting the song together. And then some hack internet critic is going to try to take something away from it. Get a life!

Thank you, saved me the time to type this out.

        • Jason Theorist

If you think this is really all in one take and unedited, you, i am afraid to say, are a terrible engineer.

        • Jpst

Who cares? at the end, he is taking care of his kids and bright their spirit and creativity up… not like most of the useless parents of its generation that just put their kids in front of TV or video game! RESPECT just for this!

        • Jason Theorist

Take from it what you will. He is just pointing things out. Us people whp work in recording studios or make music dont hear things the same care-free way as others do. Our brains pick all music apart and analyze it and make sense of it. He didnt ruin it for you, he simply pointed out that it was later recorded and synced with the video. As is with all music videos.

        you dork.

Who cares! He’s bringing his kids up right :-) That’s one good dad.

  • Shantale Turner Wilson

This was sooo cool to watch! I loved every minute of it. I didn’t realize I was smiling so hard til the vid was over and my smile was still stuck on my face lol

  • Gareth

Love DM but have to say, those kids seem to do more live then Fletch does.

  • Desdemona’s bane

Lord, I hope Depeche Mode has seen this! They should send that family a truck-full of synthesizers and drums!

  • J

FYI: this is not a xylophone. It’s a glockenspiel.

Agreed, thumbs up! This might not be a one take video, but clearly those kids were involved and learning along the way. Those will be some seriously talented adults someday. Bravo! Love the color coded keyboards as a learning tool- great idea! And I’m still looking for that “xylophone ” that was mentioned. Those are bells! A xylophone has a completely different ‘wooden’ look and more importantly, sound! ; )

  • Brekfast_newz

They were just miming along to the record. You could even see the sleeve in the final shot

    • DMFan

That’s not a record sleeve – it’s the piano book anthology where you can play along with the notes. I have it at home, I should know. :-)

      • Brekfast_newz

Also, the record doesn’t sound like that. Perhaps I should have known :-)

Sorry to burst anyones bubble buuuut there is no way that he’s playing those bells. You can tell because when he hits them in the close up video he is keeping his mallet much closer to the actual bells, yet in the video of his face he is using a much larger swing/ pulling the mallet out of view of the close up camera… it’s all very badass, but I don’t believe he is playing those bells in “real time”

    • Jason Jermaine Smith

Even if he filmed it at different times the video is still amazing and something that many people can’t do. This is the first video like this I’ve seen. I think it’s amazing that he shared this with his kids and then shared it with the world. It’s a great start to kids who may grow up to go into the music industry.

      • BedCrunch .

They may – or may not go into the music industry. The most important is that they seem to have lots of fun with their dad!

  • Marcel Dunkelberg

The whole video is a fake :( She is playing the wrong notes on the flute and nor is she hitting the rattle multiple times but making a rattle sound.

    • OneHundredbyFifty

The kids smiles and love can’t be faked and if that is all that is real it is a masterpiece and joy to watch with that alone.

    Parenting… you’re doing it right

  • Patricia

Well, I grew up poor with an alcoholic mother. We ate day-old bread and she was drunk by dinner time. I will spare you further details, but if all you can do is find time to criticize a highly talented father for including his children in a musical endeavor, one that not only allows them to spend copious amounts of quality time together but also maybe teaches them something valuable about teamwork and perhaps imparts them with some musical skill… Well, you obviously miss the point COMPLETELY and should consider how your time on this planet could be better utilized.

All you people who are arguing about this video being real or not need to take a moment and realize that no matter how it was recorded, edited or engineered this is a video of pure fun, family and love. Stop debating and enjoy.

  • Clark Starr

Chillax all. He says: These are not live performances. They are videos of music we have pre-recorded in our studio, our master bathroom — it has great acoustics. The instruments that you hear, however, are played by who you see playing them in the videos. But remember I’m working with kids, one of them being 5 years old. I can’t submit them to the torture of recording a hundred takes. After the sixth one they are exhausted, and there are not enough scoops of ice cream to persuade them into doing ten takes. I have to simplify, so there is some pre-recording that has to be done. (http://designerdaddy.com/2012/03/ddqa-dicken-schrader-depeche-mode/)

Doesn’t make the vids or him and and his family any less completely bloody awesome. I need to get on the stick damnit.
