Man Sees Wife First Time After Surgery (Video)

AWWW, LOL — By Dave on 2013/09/10 2:21 AM

A guy named Jason Mortensen wakes up after hernia repair surgery and sees his wife, Candice Mortensen, next to his bed. Only, he doesn’t recognize her and it’s like he sees her for the very first time. Watch his adorably funny reaction:

BTW, this is what she looks like, photo via Google+:

So very funny. My husband had strange reactions after surgery too, but none quite like that. Good one

Delightful video!!! It brought back bittersweet memories to me, My late civil union spouse of 5 months (then) was going for surgery for pancreatic cancer. She was so afraid of waking up from anesthesia and not recognizing me. In the recovery room, she opened her eyes, looked at me and said , “Who are you?” I was shocked and horrified. Then she started laughing that she pulled that prank on me so well! Sadly, she passed away after 9 weeks and one day…

  • Bex

That was awesome! I wish she had found more delight in his reaction and played along though. ;)

  • Dolly

This is a cute joke played well by her husband.

  • Anonymous

this is not my beautiful wife :-)

  • Cody

I wonder when Jimmy Kimmel is going to prove to all of us that this was a hoax as well.

  • melly

k, I don’t get why he is seeing her for the first time? He was blind from the hernia or what???

  • Emily

    Yeah, I don’t understand that either :/

  • Emily

I’m so sorry that happened to you :(

  • melly

I’m thinkin maybe he is just STUPID from anesthetic……..we’ll go with that! lol ;)

  • lmj

he was out of it from the anesthesia.

  • melly

ok, thats what I was startin to think……….lol………thanx

  • Nick

Great vid. This guys a genius.

  • Nick

Stupid like a fox my friend.

  • Gina Minivora

when i gave birth to my first baby,( no anesthesia or anything) i was obviously exhausted so i fell asleep. next morning when i woke up, i had a small memory lost incident. for about 10 minutes i didnt remember where i was, why i was there, i didnt even remembered i just had a baby and didnt recognized my husband. He was hsterical trying to make me rememeber but i was mortified and started panicking. nurses went running to get my doctor. after a few minutes i started to b myself again.

  • Ookmon

Wonderful video and such a lovely couple. Staged or not, what a lovely thing for a wife to hear and what a nice husband to know just the right way to tell her. ;)

  • melly

    haha…….yep!

  • Brian Pittman

I can’t be the only one who thinks this guy sounds just like Jim Gaffigan. Or that his wife is unnaturally fixated on getting him to eat that cracker. What a wet blanket.

  • Anonymous

As someone who had morphine after a c-section, it might not be faked. I really didn’t know what I was saying at times!

  • Goober bean

I’m thinking Sodium Pentothal sometimes refers to as “the truth serum”. Was used to knock me out for surgery once…. I believe this is authentic.

  • Blondo

    Talking Heads ftw?

  • Michelle Todd

I’m glad I’m not the only one who caught that! I kept thinking I’d be putty in his hands with all those kind words, it would be like falling in love all over again! I would not just be shoving him a cracker.

  • John C Sell Jr

I believe it is real. I watched “snow” on TV once for several hours after surgery and thought it was just the best program every!

  • Sarah Stemo Paul

I’m sure they were terrified that you may have had a blood clot in your brain or an aneurism. There are quite a few things that can happen after giving birth that can affect blood flow and even neurological issues. I’m glad that your ok though! :)
This was SUPER cute!! He did seem genuinely shocked that she was his wife. I also wish she would have been more playful with it rather than shoving a cracker in his face! What a huge compliment to her, at least she knows he is still VERY attracted to her :)

  • The Man

I know right? Her reaction was really lame, and not appreciative or even amused.

  • Noodles

This totally made me sad and ruined my night :-(

  • Noodles

  • Rob

I don’t think this is fake. I had this problem after 2 of my surgeries. They tell me it’s often the result of the anesthesiologist being a tad too liberal with the drugs. In one instance I didn’t recognize my mom, and in another I didn’t recognize my wife.

  • dlf

I do wish she would’ve taken it as the compliment that it was however I agree with the guy… He hit the jack pot and I am not sure how that happened…

  • Jen

I have been put under before and I totally believe this is authentic. So sweet and funny!

  • Bonns

I Am Surprised Being That Droggy & Confused – Hospital Staff WOULD Give Him A Cracker & Leave Him Unattended??

  • Vanessa DeHart Williams

Fake. Anesthesia does not give you amnesia.

  • hegkw

Anesthesia does not give you amnesia, however it does make you extremely incoherent when you are trying to come out of it. Almost as if you’re in a dream state and don’t realize it’s reality….you can’t process information and make connections to it, but only receive what is presented and react to it.

  • SinSEAR

Honestly,..is there ANYTHING that people don’t feel a need to film?? Instead of filming her husband, she should of been seeing to it that he did not CHOCK on the cracker. This was staged.

He doesn’t want to eat the godamn cracker.

  • Lucky Leisuresuit Larry

Unattended? His wife is with him and they are always within earshot if something goes wrong. Are they supposed to assign one person per patient to sit there and stare at him?

You’re not very smart are you?

I think it is just that we have a low tolerance to it. I have a low tolerance to anything like that including even a Tylenol.

  • melly

nope apparently not! thanx for the reinforcement……lol

  • Cameron

I’m going to have to agree with him on this one. He wayyyy out kicked his coverage on that pull.

  • whatever

I thought it was cute. You couldn’t see her face, so you don’t know if it was what you say. It’s like texting, the emotion doesn’t always come through without facial expression.

  • Lebowski genmay

Off camera, she told him he’s still not getting to do @nal.

  • Jack

Um…yes, it does. In fact, one of the primary functions of anesthesia is to cause you to forget whatever experience might bleed through the sedation. The chemical most often used to induce temporary amnesia is flunitrazepam.

  • lilypad

It’s choke, not chock. And i personally don’t think the dude would have choked on the cracker. He is a grown man. You’re a negative person.

  • BUTTDART

LOL “turn around for me” Still gotta see the goods. Right?!

  • Patricia Wilson Hopkins

I know i dont remember hardly anything after coming out of anesthesia, i talked to my boyfriend(husband now) , didnt know it, still dont remember him even being there.. I think this is awesome… what a sweet video…

And Lame Larry is a dick.

  • NancyNurse

I’m a nurse and I’ve never known anyone to be force-fed a cracker, or anything else, when just coming out of anesthesia. People can be nauseated and vomit. He was just too “out of it” to have anything by mouth. I think it’s fake.

This is cute…one question though…did this guy go to the vet for surgery? I mean there’s a dog paw print on his gown…lol!

  • Andy

I’m really sorry, Ferlie. At least you’re back on track. Congratulations.

    i’M THINKIN SO ;)

  • Mike

I think she appreciated the compliment, you can hear her laughing/giggling. She was probably just slightly embarrassed. And my guess is she isn’t surprised that he’s attracted to her. I don’t think this is the first time she’s heard him compliment her beauty. Hence she’s more concerned about him not over exerting himself than about her own feelings.

So basically, this guy hit the lottery TWICE…! :D

My husband was put under anesthesia for oral surgery and had a similar reaction. He didn ‘t recognze me, though he did remember he was married. He was surprised to find out I was his wife and repeatedly told me I was beautiful. He shock was so sweet it made me cry. He also forgot we were pregnant with our first child lol
Completely possible that her husband was being genuine.

  • Lulu1367

    As I commented to Dolly:

Just because you were only groggy doesn’t mean everyone reacts to it like you do.

  • Lulu1367

It does. Doctors even you tell you that before putting you under.

  • kimbo

To me it sounded as though she was quite shocked and tried to not be alarmed towards him.. it seemed that she was maybe holding back tears. Got to be a scary moment.

  • Hatshepsut

Chock. LOL. You’re an idiot. Go chock on a dick now, okay? XD

  • Hatshepsut

Godamn? Go damn? I think you mean goddamn. Learn to spell, or risk exposing yourself as an idiot. XD

  • Hatshepsut

Correction: “After I gave birth to my first baby (with no anesthesia or anything), I was obviously exhausted, so I fell asleep. The next morning when I woke up, I had a small memory loss incident. For about 10 minutes, I didn’t remember where I was or why I was there; I didn’t even remember that I’d just had a baby and I didn’t recognize my husband. He was hysterical from trying to make me remember, but I was mortified and started panicking. Nurses went running to get my doctor, but after a few minutes, I started to be myself again.”

This has been a public service of The Ministry of Spelling & Grammar. Have a nice day, and remember, kids, always use spell-check! ;-)

  • Hatshepsut

Always know the difference between ‘you’re’ and ‘your.’

‘Your’ is possessive. Example: “How is your family doing?”

‘You’re’ means ‘you are.’ Example: “You’re sure looking good today!”

  • Hatshepsut

How is his wife supposed to know that? Maybe she had been snacking on some crackers while waiting for him to wake up and thought he should eat something. Also, I missed the part about him being force-fed. She didn’t slam it down his throat.

  • Hatshepsut

Why is every word of your sentence capitalized? Learn to use the English language, and then maybe your opinion will count for something.

Also, that is a statement and not a question, so why did you use question marks?

It should be as follows: “I am surprised that, being so groggy and confused, the hospital staff would give him a cracker and leave him unattended.”

Lucky Larry made a good point, too. He is not unattended; his wife is holding the camera. However, I would not be the least surprised to discover that you had no idea he wasn’t alone in the room by the lack of intelligence displayed in your comment.

    Go home, Bonns. You’re drunk.

  • Hatshepsut

Just because something affects you a certain way, it does not mean that everyone ‘totally’ has the same reaction. You’re ‘totally’ wrong. ‘Totally.’

  • Hatshepsut

Apparently, you’ve been lucky enough to not require any surgery where heavy anesthesia is necessary. Good for you!

Therefore, you should refrain from pretending to have knowledge on a subject in which you have no experience, lest you make yourself out to be a fool. :D

  • Hatshepsut

Go home, twitter egg. You’re drunk.

  • Hatshepsut

Wow, you’re an idiot… you must be a 90′s kid.

  • Hatshepsut

That’s what you were starting to think? Good luck finishing that process. Did you drop out of middle school, or what?

  • Hatshepsut

Don’t think, you’ll hurt yourself. Good luck getting your Good Enough Degree (GED) because I am positive you did not and will not graduate high school.

  • Hatshepsut

And willmuny & melly are proudly retarded. Good luck with those Good Enough Degrees (GEDs). You’ll go far in life! Not.

  • Hatshepsut

Yeah, because you know all about being stupid. That goes for you too, Emily.

So, did you two drop out of school in 8th grade or 9th?

  • Hatshepsut

How’s that Good Enough Degree (GED) coming along, Emily?

  • yaygod

she was crying…could you not hear her sniffling? I would’ve reacted differently too but I’m not her.

  • JustJess

In all honesty it can, Vanessa.

  • JustJess

I’m a nurse as well and She wasn’t forcing him to eat the cracker. It was just reminding him to do so. I had a PACU nurse remind me to keep eating the cracker in my hand because I kept forgetting it was there.

  • Debra Faulkner

Oh yes, I do believe this is real. I had major surgery and do not remember my family coming in to visit me while I was waking up. They told me all the things I said and did. We all had a good laugh about it later.

  • Daniel Bonacum

She could be a model,.. I totally see his point.

  • Daniel Bonacum

Him: “Turn around for a minute”
    Her: “No!”

Yep, this is real, and yes they are married. LOL

  • Anonymous

    nice catch

  • Anonymous

it’s a little funny to me that men complain about women being “too emotional” then get mad at us when we’re not emotional enough. I’m a very girly girl. I won three pageants, dress up cute all the time, but only remember crying in public once when my mom died. No, I’m happily married, but this wouldn’t make me cry. Why on earth would it? It would make me chuckle a little, I would simply just think it was cute like she did. I’m not a failure as a human for just thinking it was cute.

  • Anonymous

if he was genuinely suffering with amnesia (which he wasn’t, since this is obviously fake and she knew that), getting him to eat a cracker so he would get in his head would be much more important than becoming a celebrity like he wanted.

  • Anonymous

Sorry to make everyone angry here, but a lot of people do things like this for their fifteen minutes of fame. There are a billion other anesthesia videos that are also cute, but totally fake. I’m a doctor, but it doesn’t take an anesthesiologist to know that people don’t usually come out of surgery all cute and with movie-like amnesia. She’s pretty, I’ll give him that. But it doesn’t also mean that people have to rag on her about how she’s a terrible wife because she didn’t respond how you personally would. Especially considering she probably knew he was faking it. It’s amazing how people will bash women any chance they get.

  • Brian Pittman

Hmm, assuming he wasn’t just joking and was having trouble remembering (though probably only until the anesthesia had totally worn off), perhaps TALKING to him and helping him regain his memory would be more helpful than trying to shut him up with cracker he clearly wasn’t interested in eating. He wasn’t freaking out over not remembering, he was trying to engage her.

  • Anonymous

He’s probably a nice guy and a great husband just like mine is. I’m really tired of people telling me that I’m “better looking” than my husband and somehow that means I did something wrong for not going for the jocky douchebag. I’m never apologizing, he’s monogamous and the nicest guy I’ve ever met. It’s funny to hear guys complain about the “friendzone” then bash women for actually choosing great men who may or may not fall into their beauty number out of 10. Which one do you want? On top of it, this is only one dang picture of her circling the internet. If I wanted to have a picture circle after it went viral, I would choose the super edited photoshopped airbrushed perfected couple picture like they did. Trust me, this gives no actual evidence to how either one of them really looks, even if she is pretty. You can barely see her skin it’s so airbrushed, and I’m surprised no one has said anything about that.

  • Anonymous

youre making an assumption about a woman you don’t know and couldn’t even see the face of (and only overheard for a few minutes) calling her a bad wife because *drum roll* she asked him to eat a cracker a couple times. God forbid!! I’m personally a doctor. Not only is this probably complete bull and he’s doing this to get his 15 minutes of fame (which I’m sure his wife caught on to), but not being a “wet blanket” wouldn’t help with retrograde amnesia either. Not being a “wet blanket” also won’t help with a trauma patient on morphine. But really, tell me more about how you’re so knowledgeable in this subject.

  • WordBird

I have had multiple surgeries over the last several years after which I was “forced” to eat a cracker (or in one case, a popsicle) before I was allowed to be wheeled from the temporary “recovery” room. And it was always immediately after coming to. I never wanted to eat the cracker. I didn’t care about eating the darn cracker. But I HAD to eat it or I wasn’t allowed to be moved!!! This is ESPECIALLY common in day surgery centers where the patient leaves shortly (within an hour sometimes) after their surgery. They need to be sure that you can hold down food, liquids, and any medicine they are sending home. Fasting before surgery is common as well. So if you haven’t eaten for 24 hours, it’s important that you eat something as soon as possible to help prevent the nausea from setting in and getting out of hand.

Side note: My brother-in-law is an anesthesiologist. He said this video seems 100% authentic to him.

  • WordBird

    My reaction as well!!!

  • Brian Pittman

First off, I didn’t say she was a bad wife. I didn’t assassinate her character, I just jokingly suggested she could have played along a little. She could have done so AND fed him the cracker. And I’ll defer to your expertise about retrograde amnesia since you’re a doctor and I’m a student nurse, but I don’t see how that negates the fact that she could have engaged him more.

  • Cat52

Except why would she have been filming him coming to if it wasn’t preplanned?

  • Cat52

This is a fun video to watch and if it is fake or not, it is enjoyable. I wonder why she is filming him if it wasn’t planned?

It does cause amnesia in various forms. When my wife woke up, she was totally coherent and we had a pleasant conversation before the doctor came in. He gave her results and instructions on what to eat, told her about her meds, etc. She understood and repeated it all back to him and even asked a few questions. After he left we talked for a few more minutes and then she said., “When is the doctor going to stop in and give me the results so we can go home?” She didn’t believe me when I told her she had just carried on a 15 minute conversation with him 5 minutes ago.
