SNL Cold Open: The U.S. Men’s Heterosexual Figure Skating Championships (Video)

LOL, Pop Culture — By on 2014/01/26 4:38 AM

SNL mocks Putin’s anti-gay laws with a sketch about Team USA’s plan B for the Sochi Olympics – a heterosexual figure skating squad. Kate McKinnon and Beck Bennett as the doubles pair were the best part of this skit:

If you are outside of the U.S., you can try this video instead:

TIP: The audio gets off-sync because of the video player. I recommend moving the slider back a little bit, like every minute and half.

Nice try, but I don’t feel that ridiculing heterosexuals who choose to figure skate is the way forward. Surely equality means that there should be discrimination against anyone on the basis of the sexual orientation – and that should work both ways. If someone wants to skate, let them skate, gay or straight.

That’s the whole point of this skit, Derek. It’s satire.

Oh, I got that that was its intention, to portray heterosexuals attempting to skate as unfit, overweight, out of shape, unco-ordinated buffoons. Satire, such as George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’ usually exposes a truth through metaphor, sometimes for reasons of safety, where poking fun explicitly at a tyrannical government for example might otherwise have lethal consequences.

What truth is being exposed here?

Derek, we’re white males in America, bro. Let’s just bask in that knowledge for a minute and not get caught up in all this bitch talk. You really feel picked on here? Really?

Since I am a gay male and don’t live in the US, you may wish to rethink your question.

Funnier when it was “Blades of Glory”. I will give this skit some points for being a lot SHORTER than Blades of Glory, though.

if this were a skit about making fun of gay people they would be up in arms about this…. I no longer find Saturday night live funny…it really hasn’t been funny in over 10 years… this …like all television has become politically correct…soon there will be no more funny programs…and comedians will be limited to what they say…because no matter what someone will be offended… don rickles and comedians like that would not even get on stage today…It is all supposed to be fun…but people are toooooo thin skinned…
