A hippo rescued a wildebeest (aka gnu) that had been attacked by a crocodile on the Mara River in Kenya. The rare moment was caught on camera by Israeli photographer Vadim Onishchenko, who told Daily Mail that he saw the gnu escape the water and that it seemed to be uninjured.

A cat was rescued by a hero sailor after somehow getting stuck under HSC Gotlandia II ferry in Visby, Sweden. Johan Skärkarl put on a survival suit and jumped into the icy water, grabbed the cat and swam back with it on his stomach. The rescue operation was filmed by his colleague Stellan Stenberg:
